The follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2014 mech vs kaiju spectacle, Pacific Rim, Pacific Rim: Uprising(formerly Pacific Rim: Maelstrom) is a curious beast that is still clouded by studio secrecy even though it’s due to launch March 23, 2018. Directed by Daredevil season 1 showrunner, Steven DeKnight, and starring Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ John Boyega as the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost from the first film, nobody is sure what to expect.  But Legendary-Universal plan on stunning fans with the premiere of the first trailer. Stomp on over to the Pacific Rim: Uprising panel on Friday, October 6th at 12 p.m., with director Steven DeKnight, John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Burn Gorman, and Cailee Spaeny attending.

PEOPLE – The Fast and Furious franchise has a new heartthrob.

Scott Eastwood confirmed he’s joining the cast of Fast 8 via Instagram on Monday, and included a heartfelt homage to Paul Walker.

“It’s hard to put into words how excited I am for the next Fast & Furious,” the actor, 30, wrote. “To me, the series is so much more than just a franchise. It’s a legacy.”

The Suicide Squad actor then paid tribute to Walker, who starred as Brian O’Connor in the series before dying in a tragic car accident in 2013.

“Paul was a close friend of mine,” Eastwood wrote. “We surfed together, traveled together, and he was a huge role model and influencing figure in my life when I was younger. He still is. He was an older brother to me. For me to be able to add to the F&F story, Paul’s story, and the FAST family is like a dream come true.”

In addition to continuing his late friend’s onscreen legacy, Eastwood also revealed another legendary actor he’s excited to work with on Fast 8 – and gave some clues to his role in the upcoming action flick.

“Now I can’t say too much, but I get to play a new character who operates under Kurt Russell in the movie, which is incredible, because Kurt was a total childhood hero of mine growing up,” he explained. “Very much looking forward to learning a thing or two from such an original and cool guy.”

Russell will reprise his role as the mysterious Mr. Nobody from Furious 7. But Eastwood won’t be the only newcomer to the franchise. Charlize Theron, who learned a thing or two about awesome car chases as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, is also joining the production.

Fast 8 hits theaters April 14, 2017.

It's hard to put into words how excited I am for the next Fast & Furious. To me, the series is so much more than just a franchise. It’s a legacy. These great actors who have been in it together for so long have become a family. I absolutely can’t wait to join it. Vin – thank you for the support and the insight. Paul – I am going to make you proud. #F8

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Alec Baldwin and Scott Eastwood are teaming to star in Crown Vic, a futuristic cop thriller being produced by Brand Inc. Entertainment.

Joel Souza, who helmed an indie called Ghost Squad, is directing the project, working off his own script.

The project tells of a young, idealistic rookie (Eastwood) who is partnered with a grizzled vet (Baldwin). The younger cop is appalled at the older man’s cynical take on the job, but before the end of the night he will find his own ideals tested and compromised.

Baldwin appeared in Concussion with Will Smith and is set to appear in Warren Beatty’s untitled Howard Hughes movie.

Eastwood, who starred in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Longest Ride, will be seen in this summer’s Suicide Squad.
