DEADLINE.COM – EXCLUSIVE: After staking out a February 23, 2018 release date earlier today, Legendary Pictures is targeting Scott Eastwood for a key role alongside John Boyega in the second installment of its Pacific Rim franchise. Deadline revealed June 6 that Legendary was building the Steven S. DeKnight-directed sequel around the Star Wars: The Force Awakens star, and the company is now casting up in earnest and I think Eastwood will be the next to join the fold if his deal makes. The picture begins production late this year, based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham. Boyega will play the son of the character played by Idris Elba in the del Toro-directed original film. It wasn’t clear what the Eastwood role would be in a film that Universal will release worldwide, everywhere but China. The 2013 original grossed $411 million.

Eastwood, son of the iconic actor/director Clint Eastwood, is fast emerging as a potential star. Deadline broke news in April that Eastwood would join Fast 8 in a new role created for Universal’s biggest movie franchise which is being helmed by Straight Outta Compton‘s F. Gary Gray. Eastwood, who will be seen starring in the ensemble of the David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad, which Warner Bros releases August 5, also will appear in the Oliver Stone-directed Snowden, which Open Road releases September 16. UTA reps him.

Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and del Toro will produce the action adventure film along with Boyega and Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions shingle. Cale Boyter is executive producer. How promising does the picture look now, after Legendary showed the reach of its new owner, Wanda, with the successful launch of Warcraft in China?

VARIETY.COM – Scott Eastwood (“Suicide Squad,” “Fast 8”) and Ed Harris are set to topline in “The Last Full Measure,” from Emmy Award winner Todd Robinson (“The Legend of Billy the Kid”).

Foresight Unlimited will be selling the title, which begins lensing in September, to buyers in Cannes this year.

Based on the true story of a present day cover-up investigation, “The Last Full Measure” follows young Pentagon investigator Scott Huffman (Eastwood) as he battles the political machine in Washington. He reluctantly teams with veterans of Operation Abilene to convince Congress to award the Medal of Honor to a courageous Air Force medic who sacrificed his life saving more than 60 soldiers in the Vietnam War.

Lauren Selig, John Watson, Pen Denham, Julian Adams, Howard Brud and Mark Damon will produce while Tamara Birkemoe and Sidney Sherman exec produce.

Eastwood is repped by UTA and Harris and Freeman are repped by CAA. Fishburne is ripped by Paradigm.

OPEN ROAD FILMS – Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.

PEOPLE – The Fast and Furious franchise has a new heartthrob.

Scott Eastwood confirmed he’s joining the cast of Fast 8 via Instagram on Monday, and included a heartfelt homage to Paul Walker.

“It’s hard to put into words how excited I am for the next Fast & Furious,” the actor, 30, wrote. “To me, the series is so much more than just a franchise. It’s a legacy.”

The Suicide Squad actor then paid tribute to Walker, who starred as Brian O’Connor in the series before dying in a tragic car accident in 2013.

“Paul was a close friend of mine,” Eastwood wrote. “We surfed together, traveled together, and he was a huge role model and influencing figure in my life when I was younger. He still is. He was an older brother to me. For me to be able to add to the F&F story, Paul’s story, and the FAST family is like a dream come true.”

In addition to continuing his late friend’s onscreen legacy, Eastwood also revealed another legendary actor he’s excited to work with on Fast 8 – and gave some clues to his role in the upcoming action flick.

“Now I can’t say too much, but I get to play a new character who operates under Kurt Russell in the movie, which is incredible, because Kurt was a total childhood hero of mine growing up,” he explained. “Very much looking forward to learning a thing or two from such an original and cool guy.”

Russell will reprise his role as the mysterious Mr. Nobody from Furious 7. But Eastwood won’t be the only newcomer to the franchise. Charlize Theron, who learned a thing or two about awesome car chases as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, is also joining the production.

Fast 8 hits theaters April 14, 2017.

It's hard to put into words how excited I am for the next Fast & Furious. To me, the series is so much more than just a franchise. It’s a legacy. These great actors who have been in it together for so long have become a family. I absolutely can’t wait to join it. Now I can’t say too much, but I get to play a new character who operates under Kurt Russell in the movie, which is incredible, because Kurt was a total childhood hero of mine growing up. Very much looking forward to learning a thing or two from such an original and cool guy. Paul was a close friend of mine. For me to be able to add to the F&F story, Paul’s story, and the FAST family is like a dream come true. Gary Gray and Neal Moritz – I can’t wait to get started and dive in. Vin – thank you for the support and the insight. Paul – I am going to make you proud. #F8
